Behind the numbers: Supporting charities and NFPs to create greater impact

For many organisations operating in the charity and NFP sector, financial reports are often overwhelming. Pages of figures, percentages and projections have the potential to obscure the real story, the impact being made in communities and the sustainability of the mission. At Accounting For Good, our role is to help organisations see beyond the numbers and use financial information as a powerful decision-making tool.

As an Account Manager, our team member Jeffrey Grospe works closely with organisational leaders to interpret and understand their management reports. His background as a CPA, combined with experience as a Finance and Operations Executive at an international NGO and Treasurer for two small NFPs, has given him insight into the technical and practical realities of financial management in purpose-driven organisations.

“Accounting in the charity and not for profit sector is not just about numbers — it’s about giving organisations the clarity and confidence to maximise their impact.”

What inspired you to work with the charity and NFP sector?

“What drew me to this profession is its diversity and its potential for impact. Financial services offer the opportunity to work across a wide range of organisations, but for me, the real privilege lies in supporting those that are making a positive difference in the world.” Says Jeffrey

The sector operates in complex environments, often with limited resources and increasing compliance obligations. Strong financial stewardship is not just good governance; it is essential to achieving mission outcomes.

“A typical day in my role involves working through the latest management reports with clients. However, those meetings are only as effective as the preparation behind them. I collaborate closely with the Accounting For Good team to ensure our reports are accurate, complete and meaningful.”

Our aim is not simply to present numbers, but to explain what they mean.

As an Account Manager, I must be asking questions

  • Are programs financially sustainable?
  • Is cash flow tracking as expected?
  • Are there risks on the horizon?

When leaders understand the story behind their financial data, they can make informed strategic decisions. This may involve adjusting budgets, reallocating resources, planning for growth or preparing for an external audit.

“My particular areas of focus include management and board reporting, budgeting, forecasting and supporting organisations through audit processes.”

“One of the most rewarding aspects of this work is building financial capacity within organisations. Over time, we aim to increase our clients’ confidence and understanding of key financial concepts.”

At Accounting For Good, this work is strengthened by our team culture. We share a clear mission to support clients and value collaboration, camaraderie and continuous improvement.

“We challenge and support one another to deliver high-quality, meaningful service to our clients. That shared commitment translates directly into the client experience”

Well-structured reports can highlight opportunities, flag risks early, and provide reassurance that resources are being used wisely. For charity and not for profit organisations, every dollar counts, and clarity is vital.

“What I value most in my work is partnering with mission-driven organisations that are deeply passionate about their work. Whether they are focused on community services, education, advocacy or global development, these organisations rely on strong financial foundations to maximise their impact. Supporting them in that journey is both a responsibility and a privilege.” Jeffrey Grospe – Account Manager

“When leaders understand the story behind their financial data, they are empowered to make informed decisions that strengthen sustainability and drive meaningful change.”

What is life like for you outside of the office?

“Outside of work, I enjoy staying active through tennis, yoga and pilates, as well as reading and travelling. These interests provide balance and perspective, something that is equally important in professional life”.

Just as organisations benefit from stepping back to review their financial position, individuals benefit from pausing, reflecting, and recharging.

At the end of the day, accounting in the charity and not for profit sector is about helping organisations maximise their impact. When financial systems are strong, reporting is clear, and governance is sound, organisations are free to focus on what matters most: delivering meaningful change in the world.
